Authorities reported they were contacted by a man who found a vehicle in Hanau covered with reddish fluid

Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.

A high-ranking official said the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
