In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
